Whitehall, Wisconsin
Settlers first came to these picturesque bluffs and fertile valleys in the 1850's. Twenty years later, the railroad came and a village sprang up.
Lying among the rolling hills of Wisconsin's scenic non-glaciated region, 
Whitehall offers beauty, peace and quiet but not - isolation. Founded in 1876, Whitehall is the county seat of Trempealeau County. It is the central business point for people throughout the county. It is home to the county sheriff and highway departments, as well as other county governmental agencies.
Whitehall features services and institutions which normally would be found in larger communities. Tri-County Memorial Hospital and the adjoining Gunderson Clinic-Whitehall provide medical facilities. The health services offer 24-hour ambulance and emergency room care. They also have an optometrist, mental-health counseling, kidney dialysis, physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation. Other health-care facilities located in the city include a dental and chiropractic clinic.
There is plenty for visitors and local residents to do. The city boasts three parks, plus a central square complete with an old fashioned gazebo. The park system has a full range of recreational facilities
including a newly constructed Aquatic Center in Colonel Larson Memorial Park, which includes zero-depth entry, a water slide, a diving area, numerous sand and play features and a concession area. Our parks also include a lighted softball field and basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. All of the park facilities are beautifully maintained and provide excellent recreational opportunities for all ages. Whitehall's City Center includes a fully equipped exercise room and a full size gymnasium as well as community meeting facilities and the public library.
The surrounding countryside provides hunting for white-tailed deer, small game, turkey, pheasant and grouse. Miles of trout streams are located within a few minutes of the city. Whitehall-Pigeon Rod and Gun Club offers fishing summer and winter, archery, trap shooting, and banquet facilities.
Whitehall is the hub of the county's 200 mile snowmobile trail system as well as offering bike trails.
The place to be on Friday night during the summer is the Farmer's Market in Whitehall, located at Melby Park. Arrive early (around 4:00 PM) and participate in the fun as the vendors set up their stands. Mingle with the Amish families as they fill tables with copious quantities of garden fresh produce. Find the farm couple who grow the best tomatoes in their greenhouse. When apples are in season, be sure to pick up a bag and if you are lucky, you can buy one of their homemade apple pies. Sign up for the drawing, which is held before the market closes, and maybe win one of the prizes furnished by local merchants. The vendors number from five to fifteen and offer items from organic produce, baked goods, flowers and crafts just to name a few. At four o'clock one of the local service groups will offer a lunch that will vary from the Fire Department's famous BBQ Chicken to a hot sandwich lunch prepared by a local Scout Unit, or any of the many groups that take turns at the Market. Through the support of the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the fun really begins at five o'clock when a local musical group sets up in the shelter and entertains the crowd until the end of the market. Sit down at one of the many tables in the shelter or around the park and enjoy lunch, talk with the friendly people of Trempealeau County, sing along with the music or maybe even catch a local high school baseball game. It will offer you a visit to the past through a calm view of the present.
