Wisconsin's Great River Road
flanks the majestic Mississippi River as it
leisurely winds its way along 250 miles of
the Wisconsin west border. Along its way,
the road is nestled between the river on one
side and towering bluffs on the other,
becoming one of the most scenic drives in
mid-America. Most of the time the road
parallels the river, but when the road does
meander a short way from the river, it
treats its guests to vistas of rolling
farmland and beautiful forested valleys and
coulees. |

The Rustic Roads system in
Wisconsin was created in 1973 in an effort
to preserve what remains of Wisconsin’s
scenic lightly traveled country roads.
Unique brown and yellow signs mark the
routes of all officially designated Rustic
Roads, and there is a maximum speed of 45
mph. To avoid confusion the letter “R”
prefix is used with the road number. In
Trempealeau County our Rustic Road is a
River Drive Loop off of WI 54, it is 5 miles
in length, and it is unpaved. This is a true
back country road and may not be passable in
the winter or during wet periods. |

Listed on the
National Register of Historic Places
since 1984, the Main Street Historic
District encompasses Main Street
from First Street on the Mississippi
River to Third Street. Follow the
history of this small fur trading
center and river landing from 1871
through 1925. Eight buildings, many
of which are popular visitor
destinations today, make this area
an interesting and mostly intact
remnant of a “turn of the century”
small town commercial area that has
high architectural integrity and
attractiveness. A walking guide to
this area may be obtained in the
Village Office or the Chamber. The
Historical Society is open Saturday
and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
or by appointment. |
